Abstract

This research was carried out based on the hypothetical deductive method and intends to highlight social problems portrayed in the modernist and realistic works “Morte e Vida Severina” and “O Rio”, by João Cabral de Melo Neto. The author depicts the reality of the Brazilian northeast with the regional drought and the lack of support for a dignified life. These highlighted social problems are placed under an analysis of the Universal Proclamation of Human Rights, of 1948, and the Federal Constitution of 1946, in force at the time of publication of the literature in question. In this way, an analysis is made of possible social variables that may directly influence access to legislation, both in its knowledge and in its effectiveness.
