Abstract

The visibility of pixação has been occupying every space in the city of São Paulo, causing a transformation in public space and generating discomfort among the more privileged classes. For pixadores, most of whom live on the urban peripheries, it is a way of expressing that their needs are not restricted to inhabiting the city, but also to constructing it, both its history, landscape, daily life and politics. The aim of this paper is therefore to study pixação, based on a description of the movements, expressions and sociability of pixadores among themselves and towards the city of São Paulo. The results come not only from bibliography, but also from simple, unstructured participant observation. It is understood that the right to the city is born on the street, from informality and on the periphery, sustained by reasons capable of mobilizing public debates and by the actions of civil society, established by the struggles for recognition and inclusion. As a result, pixação is a form of demand for the right to the city and for physical and visual occupation of urban space.
