Abstract

This work aims to show the intertwined speeches in How many children did Natalina have? by Conceição Evaristo, in the light of legal arguments and assumptions that relate Law to Literature. The methodology consists of theoretical-bibliographical research and is based on Badinter (1985), Campello (2017), Leal (2017), Santos (2018), who are interested in motherhood and the aforementioned literary tale; in addition to authors such as Rodríguez (2002), Trindade and Bernsts (2017), Streck (2013), who discuss the relationship between Law and Literature. The Brazilian legal norm is also sought, in order to dialectize these relations between the art of interpreting social and human precepts and other arts. The results showed that in the fabric of the artistic text there are two intersecting discourses that complement each other, making the reader reach the question located in the title of the tale. Is it valid to ask what rights and possible illicit acts the female character commits when exercising motherhood due to immaturity, carelessness, convenience, solidarity or choice? It is hoped that this text will contribute to the close relationship between Law and Literature and be another way of critical analysis of Evaristo's narrative.
