Psycho-pass: cyberpunk dystopia or bureaucratic utopia

In this article, we analyze the anime Psycho-pass (Gen Urobuchi, 2012). This work, set in 22nd-century Tokyo, presents a government that has managed to eradicate virtually all crime in Japan by utilizing mass profiling of the consciences of the country's citizens. All of this is done through a mysterious Artificial Intelligence called the Sybil System. We evaluate the perspectives from which this fictional world can be seen as a typical cyberpunk dystopia or as a bureaucratic utopia, using the arguments of its own characters. We will also consider where a canon of preventive justice can lead both to the fulfillment of the deepest objectives of any state government administration and to legitimate disobedience based on the value of freedom.
