Werther e o (suposto) poder da literatura

Os amigos da literatura costumam dizer que ela é capaz de tornar as pessoas mais compreensivas e benevolentes. Os inimigos da literatura, por outro lado, costumam dizer que ela é capaz de corromper os leitores. Cada um do seu modo, os dois grupos exageram o poder da literatura. O exagero tem consequências importantes para a discussão sobre o papel da literatura no currículo das faculdades de direito e para o debate sobre os limites da liberdade de expressão literária. Este artigo discute uma das obras literárias mais frequentemente usadas para exemplificar os efeitos nocivos da literatura: Os sofrimentos do jovem Werther, de Goethe. Diz um lugar-comum entre estudiosos da literatura que a publicação da obra teria provocado uma onda de suicídios na Europa do século XVIII. Este artigo questiona o lugar-comum sobre o livro de Goethe, ressaltando a fragilidade dos seus fundamentos e a gravidade das suas implicações.
