This article will investigate the possibilities of the novel as a method of knowledge as presented by Julián Marías (1950). This method of the Spanish philosopher will be described in the introduction. The second section of the article will be dedicated to the analysis of a character from the novel Sotileza, by José María de Pereda (1954). The philosophical theoretical framework that will guide the interpretation of the novel will be the Neoclassical Natural Law Theory, presented in the second section. In the third section the narrative structure of reason will be compared to the narrative structure of human life in order to verify whether (and how) the basic human goods described by the Neoclassical Natural Law Theory are perceived and sought in time – dramatically. The conclusion of the article will take care of the reverberations of this research in the ethical understanding of human rights.
