Literature as a way of reception: children in situations of refuge and children’s literature

Abstract

The present paper deals with the reception of refugee children in Brazil, through literature. This project aims to analyze how children's books – Um outro país para Azzi, by Sarah Garland (2012), O quintal de Aladim, by Andréa Avelar (2021), Um lençol de infinitos fios, by Susana Ventura (2019), A menina que abraça o vento, by Fernanda Paraguassu (2017), and Deixando para trás, by Ana Dantas (2017) – portray children in refugee situations. In turn, the objectives are to contextualize the refugee child; study the theory of integral protection; and analyze how children's literature portrays refugee children and becomes important instrument of reception. It consists of three specific objectives: contextualizing the refugee child; studying integral protection; and analyzing how children's literature portrays children in refugee situations. In this study, we used a deductive approach, the monographic procedure method, and documentary and bibliographic research techniques. The results demonstrate that literature is a valuable instrument for integrating refugee children locally in Brazil and ensuring their integral protection.
