This is a descriptive bibliographical study based on the experiences and results of two reading projects developed in prisons in Minas Gerais, reported in the works by Baquim; Oliveira; Arruda (2020) and Pimenta Júnior (2022). The aim was to analyse and describe the challenges faced in implementing literary reading as a process of re-socialization of people deprived of their liberty. To this end, we sought to highlight the importance of literary literacy so that the experience of literary reading can become a humanizing instrument and a possible (re)construction of the human being. The theoretical framework used were the ideas of Cândido (2011), Cosson (2020; 2021) and Petit (2009), integrated with the propositions of Jauss (1994) and Iser (1996), about the Aesthetics of Reception. The results obtained show the obstacles that interfere with the implementation of literary reading in the prison setting, as well as the intermediaries that limit the voluntary adherence of people in deprivation of liberty to sentence remission projects or other literary reading activities. However, we recognize the possibility of literary reading contributing to people deprived of their liberty establishing a meaningful relationship with what they read and becoming readers, as well as acting in the process of resocialization.
